Med Flory

Meredith Irwin 'Med' Flory was born August 27, 1926 in Logansport, Indiana.

He got his start musically in New York City playing alto saxophone and clarinet in bands led by illustrious leaders such as Claude Thornhill and Woody Herman. He also played in smaller groups, some of which he led himself.

In 1954, Med relocated to the west coast and played in both big and small jazz bands. But Med did not limit himself to music. He was also a screenwriter and actor.  In addition to acting in over 20 movies, he appeared in episodes of Bonanza, Daniel Boone, Mission: Impossible, and many other television shows in the 60's, 70's and on into the 80's.

But Med's biggest love is music. In the 1950's he conceived of the idea of arranging some of Charlie Parkers solos for a complete saxophone section. This idea was put on the shelf until Med met up with Buddy Clark and they made their dreams a reality in 1972, forming the group Supersax.  Supersax was made up of 5 saxophonists, and 4 other band members. Their debut album, 'Supersax Plays Bird' won a Grammy in 1973 for the best jazz performance by a group. Lightening almost struck twice in 1975 when they were nominated for a second Grammy for 'Supersax Plays Bird With Strings', but they were beat out by Chick Corea. In all, Supersax recorded 10 albums. Though Buddy Clark left in 1975 and there were numerous other changes through the years, Med remained the driving force behind the group.

Med continues to perform and write music to this day and soon will go back in the studio to record a new CD with Supersax.
